Tonal Checkerboard Flooring Trends
The Softer, Smarter Take on a Classic
Tonal checkerboard flooring has become one of the most wanted looks in interiors, bringing a softer, more design-led feel to a classic pattern.
Less stark than traditional black and white checks, it uses closely related shades to create depth, movement and character in a way that feels warm, stylish and easy to live with.
For kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and beyond, it is a clever way to make the floor the feature without overwhelming the room.
Think chalk and clay. Mushroom and oat. Olive and sage. Dusty blue and slate.
Same beautiful rhythm, same sense of structure, but with a quieter confidence that feels far more at home in today’s interiors.
And when it comes to flooring, this is exactly where tonal checkerboard earns its stripes.
Or, more accurately, its squares.

What is tonal checkerboard?
Tonal checkerboard is exactly what it sounds like: a checkerboard made from two shades that sit closer together on the colour spectrum rather than at opposite ends of it.
So instead of a dramatic black-and-white contrast, you get something more layered and more nuanced.
The pattern is still there, but it whispers rather than shouts. It gives a room movement, order and character without making the whole scheme feel bossy.
That is what makes it such a strong fit for flooring.
Floors do more than finish a room — they help define it. Tonal checkerboard gives you the recognisable charm of a classic check, but with a softer, more design-conscious look that feels fresh and easy to live with.

Why tonal checkerboard works so brilliantly on floors
Some trends look lovely in a saved post and then completely fall apart the second you imagine them in an actual home. Tonal checkerboard is not one of those.
It works because it brings together two things flooring should always do well: look good and make the room feel better.
A tonal check can:
Add pattern without creating chaos
You get all the structure of a geometric floor, but the lower contrast keeps it feeling calm. Ideal if you love pattern but don’t want your kitchen, hallway or bathroom to look like it is trying too hard.
Make a room feel considered
There is something about a checkerboard that instantly makes a space feel styled. Tonal colourways just make that styling feel fresher, warmer and more current.
Bridge classic and contemporary
This is the sweet spot. Tonal checkerboard has enough heritage in it to feel timeless, but enough softness to sit beautifully in modern homes too.
Play with scale in a really useful way
Large squares can make a room feel more expansive and architectural. Smaller squares can feel more detailed, decorative and playful. The right scale changes everything.

Why flooring is where this trend really comes into its own
Walls can be repainted. Cushions can be swapped. Floors do the heavy lifting.
That is exactly why tonal checkerboard feels so exciting right now. Designers are paying more attention to the floor as a major design feature rather than just a background surface, and checkerboard is part of that broader move towards statement floors that still feel elegant.
A tonal checkerboard floor can anchor a room without pinning you into one look. It works with warm woods, painted cabinetry, antique finds, clean-lined furniture, brushed metals, natural textures and colour-drenched walls. It has range.
It can look:
- soft and sophisticated in a hallway
- warm and welcoming in a kitchen
- unexpectedly chic in a utility
- properly special in a bathroom
Which brings us, very conveniently, to Chess.
Meet Chess: our hero checkerboard design
Our Chess flooring is our take on the classic checkerboard, but made for real homes and real people rather than rigid off-the-shelf choices.
At its heart, it is gloriously simple: two colours, square format, loads of impact.
But the clever bit is this: it does not have to stay as shown.

With Chess, we can change:
- the two colours
- the size of the squares
- the direction/orientation of the design
And we do all of that at no extra cost. Same price per square metre, whether you want something soft and tonal, bold and contrasty, or somewhere in between.
So if you want:
- stone and putty instead of black and white
- sage and moss for a softer kitchen look
- chalky pink and clay for something warmer
- oversized squares to open up a room
- a different orientation to better suit the shape of the space
That is exactly what we do.
This is not a “pick from three approved colours and hope for the best” situation.
This is bespoke flooring, made properly personal.

What makes our version different?
Quite a lot, actually.
No one else offers this same direct-to-consumer service in quite the same way: a design-led checkerboard floor, customisable in colour, scale and direction, made to your space, with no need to order a standard roll size you do not actually need.
Here is what that means in real terms:
Made to your space
You enter your room dimensions on the product page and we make what you need. Not a generic “close enough” size. Not a one-roll-fits-all compromise. Your floor is produced to suit your measurements, up to 2.9 metres wide.
No minimum full roll requirement
You do not need to buy a whole roll just because that is how other suppliers work. We only manufacture what you need, which means less waste, less cost and a more sensible way to order.
Free samples
You can request a free sample first of our ‘standard’ Chess design, so you can see the finish and quality in your own home before making any decisions. We use the same base for all bespoke designs and colourways, but confirmation of custom colour changes will be sent via email.
Proofs before production
Once you order, we send you proofs showing both the complete design size to your space and the exact scale used. That means you can tweak colours, square size or direction until it feels exactly right. Nothing goes into production until you are happy.
Easy fitting
Chess is supplied on a roll, which means no individual tiles, no grout lines and a lot less mess. It is a much easier way to get the checkerboard look. Roll out, trim and fit with a non-solvent vinyl adhesive.
Made for real-life rooms
Our patterned vinyl flooring is R10 anti-slip rated, making it suitable for spaces like kitchens and bathrooms where you want something beautiful but also practical underfoot.
Quick turnaround
Production takes around two weeks from proof approval, which is a lot more satisfying than falling in love with a floor and then waiting forever for it.
And we’re also here for when the tonal needs turning up a notch….
How to make tonal checkerboard feel right for your home
The beauty of Chess is that it can go in several very different directions depending on the choices you make.
For a softer, earthy look…
Try warm neutrals, clay tones, olive, chalk, taupe or mushroom. These colours keep the pattern elegant and easy to live with.
For a cleaner, fresher feel…
Soft greys, off-whites, muted blue-greens or stony tones create a lighter, calmer finish.
For more impact without going full contrast…
Choose two colours with a little more separation, but still within the same mood. Think faded terracotta and blush, or moss and linen.
For smaller rooms…
A well-judged checkerboard can actually help a compact space feel more intentional and expansive, especially when the scale is right. Direction matters here too, which is why being able to adjust the orientation is so useful.

Why this matters more than ever
The big shift in interiors now is away from flat, forgettable finishes and towards spaces with more personality, more warmth and more point of view. Tonal checkerboard fits that perfectly.
It has the structure we all love in classic design, but without the severity.
All the personality, but still feels grown-up.
It makes a statement, but it is not desperate for attention.
In other words: it is exactly the sort of floor people remember.

The final word on tonal checkerboard flooring
Tonal checkerboard is proof that a classic does not need reinventing from scratch to feel new again. Sometimes it just needs softening, refining and handing over to people who know how to make it work beautifully in a real home.
That is exactly why Chess has become such a hero product.
It gives you the timeless appeal of checkerboard flooring, but with the freedom to make it your own — your colours, your scale, your layout, your room.
No extra charge for the bespoke changes, no minimum full roll and no generic compromise.
Just a properly good floor, made to fit, and made to feel like you.
Because beige was never going to be the end of the story.
Not sold on squares? Fair enough.
Stripes offer a more streamlined, directional look, while stars bring a little more playfulness to the party — and both can be tailored to your space just like the rest of our collection.
